A VA claim can move forward with a scheduled exam that the family never sees, because the notice went to an address the veteran no longer uses. VA sends notices to the address on the claim. If Dad moved, went into a facility, or has mail sent to another household, the letter can sit unread while the response window runs. The first sign is often silence.

Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.

Check the address on the claim against where Dad sleeps

Pull the address and phone number on the claim and compare them with where the veteran lives this week. A facility, a relative's spare room, and a home with a new mailbox can each produce a mismatch. Confirm who opens the mail, whether a forwarding order is in place, and which phone number VA has if it needs to call. Keep one written line with the address, the phone number, and the name of the person who checks mail each week.

Early signs the notice missed you

  • No exam letter has arrived after the claim was filed, and the family is waiting on mail that never comes.
  • A call came from a number you do not recognize, and nobody answered it.
  • A letter mentions an appointment you have no record of.
  • The address on the claim is an old one, even though the family has changed where the veteran lives.

If a notice was missed

Call VA promptly, ask to reschedule, and say that the notice went to an old address. Ask what the rescheduling rule is for your claim and whether a home visit or a different location is possible. Write down the name of each person you speak with and the outcome of each call. VA can decide a claim on the evidence it already holds, so a missed exam can change the result, and an early call keeps more options open.1

If the letter is confusing, a local helper can read it with you. Local Help: St. Louis Offices lists places in the area that can look at the paper with you.

Questions to put to the family

  • Who receives Dad's mail, and does that person know the claim is open?
  • Has anyone changed the phone number VA would use?
  • If an exam is scheduled, who can drive the veteran or host the visit?

This is a checklist, not legal advice. The letter itself, and the instructions VA printed in it, control what happens next.
