Families often ask how long private pay will last before a VA claim starts paying. There is no honest single answer. VA does not promise a decision date, and a pension that is awarded can be paid from an effective date tied to the claim, so the back pay picture depends on the file.12 The useful question is narrower: how many months can this household carry the care the veteran needs, with the money it has, at the hours he actually needs?
Local option (paid placement): New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.
Start with the household, not the price list
List who lives in the home, who is available for care hours, and which rooms and routines the care must cover. A household where a spouse can cover some nights needs a different bridge from one where the veteran lives alone. Size the hours to what the veteran needs, not to what the family hopes to avoid.
Write down the fixed bills
Put the monthly fixed bills on one page: housing, utilities, insurance premiums, and debts. Then add the care hours at the rate the agency quotes you in writing. Do not estimate the rate from someone else's bill. Ask the agency what it charges for weekday hours, overnight hours, and weekends, and whether it has minimum shift lengths.
Count the money you can actually use
Not all savings work the same way. Note which accounts can be drawn on without a penalty or a sale, and which need a decision first. If a home or another asset may be sold to fund care, read VA's net worth rules before the sale closes, because the sale itself changes what VA counts.2
Compare the months against the claim timeline
Ask the accredited representative, or the VA office, for the claim's current status and what is still waiting on the file.1 Then set two bridge lengths: one that matches the timeline you were given, and one with a longer margin you choose. If the family can carry only the first, the plan is fragile. Build it to survive the second.
Where to get help sizing it
The St. Louis offices listed on the local help page can point you to who files and who tracks status. The reading order on Start Here lays out the sequence of steps.
