Private pay can start the same week a family decides on care, long before any VA decision arrives. VA sets any effective date and any back payment on its own schedule, so the plan has to work with no pension money yet. The first two weeks test whether the arrangement holds.1
Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.
Step 1: Make the house ready before the first shift
Walk the house the way the aide will enter it: the door they will use, the path to your father's room, the bathroom, and the kitchen. Note where the keys, the emergency contact sheet, and a phone charger are kept. Confirm that your father's medicine stays where the family keeps it, with the family, the doctor, and the pharmacist handling it.
Step 2: Hand off in person, not by text
Plan the first visit as a handoff, with a family member present for at least the first shift. Walk the aide through the daily routine, the meal preferences, the phone numbers, and what your father does when he is tired or upset. Put the house rules on one page, give the aide a copy, and keep a copy yourself.
Step 3: Keep a daily log for the first two weeks
A short log, one line per shift, records arrival and departure times, what was done, and anything out of the ordinary. The log protects your father because it shows what happened. It protects the family because a dispute over hours or a missed reminder becomes a question of record rather than memory. Keep the signed schedule and every receipt in one folder.
Step 4: Hold a review at the end of week one
Sit down with the aide and whoever coordinates the care. Ask three things: does the schedule match what your father needs, do the hours billed match the hours worked, and what has changed. If something is wrong, fix the schedule now, before the second week builds on the error.
Step 5: Plan for the VA decision without relying on it
Once the claim is filed, keep the same folder going. Write down any VA correspondence and the day it arrived. If a decision comes, it may cover a period that began before the decision was issued, but the amount and the timing are set by VA, not by the family or the aide. Budget as though the pension has not yet arrived.
