A pending claim is supposed to be slow. What families do not expect is a claim that stops producing any sign at all. The file can sit while VA waits for a record, a form, or a reply that went to the wrong place, and the family hears nothing. The decision is rarely the first problem. The weeks of silence before anyone notices are.
Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.
Four signs the file has stalled
- A letter asked for more evidence and the reply deadline printed on it has passed without an answer on file.
- The claim status has not changed for longer than the family expected, and no letter explains why.
- A letter asks for a record the family believed was already submitted, which can mean the first packet did not attach or route the way you think.
- A doctor's office or records source says it received a request, but nothing has come back.
None of these proves the claim is in trouble. Each one is a reason to check before the next step is missed.
What to check first
Start with the mailing address. A changed address is among the most common reasons a letter goes unseen, so confirm the address VA has on file and the address each provider has for Dad. Then check the claim status through VA's online tools or by phone. Write down the reference number, the name of the person you spoke with, and what they said is still open.
Keep one folder with a copy of everything sent, every confirmation of receipt, and every letter received, in the order it arrived. When you ask a question by phone, follow up in writing so the answer exists on paper.
Know what the open item is
An open item is usually one of three things: a request for evidence, a scheduled exam, or a routing problem where a document reached the wrong unit. Each needs a different response. A request for evidence needs the specific record named in the letter, not a general packet. An exam needs confirmation of the location and the time. A routing problem needs the document re-sent with the claim number on every page.
When to ask for local help
If the file has not moved and no one can give a clear answer, ask an accredited representative to review it. The offices listed on Local Help: St. Louis Offices can look at the status with you. Bring your folder so the review starts from facts.
