How long does Aid and Attendance take to get approved is the question after you have the forms in a folder. The honest answer is that VA does not give this desk a number to print as a promise. You file, you protect the date, you check the status tool, and you do not leave him alone at 2am while you wait.
A consultant will tell you "about three months" as if that were a contract. It is not. VA's how-to-apply page says it depends, and that claims are processed in the order received unless a claim requires priority processing. That is the sentence this briefing will not improve on. Times move. Your file is your file. The way you watch it is the claim status tool, not a sales script.
How long does Aid and Attendance take to get approved?
Aid and Attendance is not a separate queue with its own clock on this site. It is an add-on to a Veterans or Survivors Pension. VA lets you check the status of a VA claim, decision review, or appeal for Veterans or Survivors Pension benefits in the same tool used for other benefit types. Sign in. Read the status. If VA asks for more evidence, that is the delay that is actually in your control.
What the tool will show you, in VA's own list, includes evidence you filed online, additional evidence they requested, and the claim type. It will not give you a guaranteed calendar date. If a status is complete, VA's FAQ on the tool says they have already mailed the decision letter and that it can take days to arrive. How do I protect the effective date while I wait?

VA says Form 21-0966 can secure the earliest possible effective date for any retroactive payments you may be eligible to receive while you are still gathering information. On the how-to-apply page, VA describes retroactive payments as payments for the time between when they processed your intent to file and when they approved the claim. If you sign in with an identity-verified account and apply for pension online, you do not need a separate intent to file.
That is the move for tonight if the forms are not ready: tell a VSO you need an intent on file, or apply online with a verified account. Sitting on a blank 21-2680 for six weeks, with no intent and no application, is how families give away back pay they never see. The exam still has to be done. The date does not have to wait on the exam.

Can care start before the Aid and Attendance check arrives?
Yes. A claim number does not stand in the hallway. If he cannot be left alone tonight, that is an hours-in-the-house problem tonight. Benefits can catch up. Presence cannot wait on a claim.

What to do tonight
