Aid and Attendance eligibility wartime dates: the three gates Dad has to pass
VA Aid and Attendance eligibility wartime dates are public. So are the other two gates. Service, need, and money, in that order. If a consultant skips the table and starts with an annuity, that is not a briefing. That is a pitch.
Somebody told you the VA will pay for in-home care because Dad served. Hold that thought. Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits are monthly payments added to a VA pension for qualified Veterans and survivors who need help with daily activities such as bathing, feeding, and dressing, or who are housebound. You cannot receive Aid and Attendance and Housebound at the same time. It is not a voucher sent to a care company. It is cash on a pension, if the file clears three gates.
What wartime dates does VA Aid and Attendance eligibility use?
Aid and Attendance rides on the Veterans Pension. The pension is for wartime Veterans. VA publishes the wartime periods it recognizes under current law. Copy them from that page, not from a flyer:
- Mexican Border period: May 9, 1916, to April 5, 1917, for Veterans who served in Mexico, on its borders, or in adjacent waters
- World War I: April 6, 1917, to November 11, 1918
- World War II: December 7, 1941, to December 31, 1946
- Korean conflict: June 27, 1950, to January 31, 1955
- Vietnam War era for Veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam: November 1, 1955, to May 7, 1975
- Vietnam War era for Veterans who served outside the Republic of Vietnam: August 5, 1964, to May 7, 1975
- Gulf War: August 2, 1990, through a future date to be set by law or presidential proclamation
If Dad talks about Korea, look at June 27, 1950, to January 31, 1955. If he talks about Vietnam, look at which of the two Vietnam lines matches where he actually served. One day during a listed wartime period is the wartime piece. It is not the whole service test.
VA also lists how long he had to be on active duty. If he started on active duty before September 8, 1980, he needs at least 90 days on active duty with at least 1 day during wartime. If he started as an enlisted person after September 7, 1980, the bar is at least 24 months or the full period for which he was called or ordered to active duty, with at least 1 day during wartime, with some exceptions. Officers who started after October 16, 1981, have their own line on the same page. Do not guess which line he is on. A VSO will read the DD214 against that page.
Discharge matters. The pension page says the Veteran was not dishonorably discharged. Other-than-honorable and bad-conduct paperwork is a VSO conversation, not a kitchen-table decision.
Does a Korea or Vietnam veteran automatically qualify for Aid and Attendance?
No. Wartime service is gate one. Gate two is the need the VA will accept. Gate three is income and net worth. A man can have a Korea ribbon in a drawer and still fail the money gate, or fail the need gate, or both.
The pension itself has an age-or-disability door. VA says the Veterans Pension pays monthly amounts to wartime Veterans whose yearly family income and net worth meet congressional limits, and who are at least 65, have a permanent and total disability, live in a nursing home for long-term care because of a disability, or receive SSDI or SSI. Aid and Attendance is an add-on to that pension, not a substitute for it.
Need, for Aid and Attendance, is the VA's language: help with daily activities, or housebound. That is not a story you write. It is VA Form 21-2680, filled out by an examining physician. Bring the blank form to the next appointment. Do not tell the doctor what to write. Do not let a stranger tell the doctor what to write either.
What is the net worth limit for Veterans Pension in 2026?
From December 1, 2025, to November 30, 2026, the net worth limit to be eligible for Veterans Pension benefits is $163,699. Maximum Annual Pension Rates increased 2.8 percent effective December 1, 2025. Those are the VA's numbers for this rate year. If you are reading this after November 30, 2026, open that page again. Do not trust a printout from last winter.
For a Veteran with no dependents, VA lists the Maximum Annual Pension Rate as $17,441 without Housebound or Aid and Attendance, $21,313 with Housebound, and $29,093 with Aid and Attendance. VA also reviews asset transfers in the three years before the claim. If assets were transferred for less than fair market value during that look-back, and those assets would have pushed net worth over the limit, a penalty period of up to five years can apply. That is the sentence a "we restructure this week" pitch is dancing around. Do not move money to manufacture eligibility. Take the actual numbers to a VSO. If someone is pushing an annuity as the price of filing, read the free-filing page before you sign anything.

How the claim actually starts
The Veteran form is VA Form 21P-527EZ, Application for Veterans Pension. VA also tells you how to apply online, by upload, by mail, in person, or with an accredited representative. An intent to file can protect the effective date while you gather the DD214 and the doctor's page. None of that requires a paid consultant.

What to do tonight
- Put your hands on the DD214, or write down branch, years, and the war he names.
- Open the VA wartime period list and circle the line that matches. If two lines could match, circle both and leave the call to a VSO.
- Do not transfer assets, sign an annuity, or pay a fee to file.
- Call a VSO in the morning. The county and state doors are listed on this site. Bring the DD214 and a one-page note of what he cannot do alone. That note is for the VSO, not a diagnosis.
When to ask the care team or the doctor
Whether he needs regular help with bathing, dressing, feeding, or whether he is housebound, is a question for the physician who treats him. This desk does not decide it. The examining physician completes Form 21-2680. If a symptom has changed this week, if he has fallen, if he is newly confused, call the care team or the doctor. Aid and Attendance is a benefits question. A change in the body is a medical question.
