How much does Aid and Attendance pay in 2026, and which MAPR row is Dad actually on?
How much does Aid and Attendance pay in 2026 is the question after someone circles a monthly figure on a flyer. Hold that circle. VA publishes an annual maximum, not a household check and not a staffing budget. If the person across the table already converted it to monthly and started selling hours, that is a pitch. Open the table.
By the Aid and Attendance STL desk. September 11, 2026. Every number links to its source.
Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits are monthly payments added to a VA pension for qualified Veterans and survivors who need help with daily activities such as bathing, feeding, and dressing, or who are housebound. You cannot receive Aid and Attendance and Housebound at the same time. There is no Aid and Attendance check that exists on its own. If the pension does not clear, the add-on does not either. This page quotes one row from VA's rate table, sends you to the rest, and will not invent a monthly amount this desk has not seen.
Block 01How much does Aid and Attendance pay in 2026?
VA does not publish a 2026 "Aid and Attendance check" as a single figure. It publishes Maximum Annual Pension Rates, and a net worth limit, on the same rates page. From December 1, 2025, to November 30, 2026, Maximum Annual Pension Rates increased 2.8 percent effective December 1, 2025. If you are reading this after November 30, 2026, open that page again. A printout from last winter is not this rate year.
For a Veteran with no dependents, VA lists MAPR as $17,441 without Housebound or Aid and Attendance, $21,313 with Housebound, and $29,093 with Aid and Attendance. Those three figures are annual. They are the ceiling for that household shape, before countable income comes off. Every other household size is on the same table. Open it. Do not ask this page to invent the spouse row, the surviving-spouse row, or a child row from memory.
MAPR is a maximum annual rate. Countable income reduces what is paid. If a consultant treats $29,093 as money that will land in the household, they have skipped the income step and the need step. The table is a ceiling, not a promise. The net worth limit on that same page, for this rate year, is $163,699. That is a separate gate, covered on the income and net worth briefing.
Block 02Which MAPR row is Dad actually on?
You do not pick the row. VA does, after the file is in. First he has to be on the pension at all. Veterans Pension is for wartime Veterans who were not dishonorably discharged, whose yearly family income and net worth meet congressional limits, and who are at least 65, or have a permanent and total disability, or live in a nursing home for long-term care because of a disability, or receive SSDI or SSI. Wartime periods live on that eligibility page. The three-gates briefing is the wartime page on this desk.
Household size changes the row. Married, not married, a dependent child still in the house: those are different lines. This desk will not print them. Open the Veterans Pension rates table and find the household that matches. If two lines could match, circle both and leave the call to a VSO. A surviving spouse is not on the Veteran rows. That path uses VA Form 21P-534EZ.
Housebound and Aid and Attendance are different add-ons. You cannot receive both at the same time. The need is not a story you write so that the higher row applies. It is VA Form 21-2680, completed by an examining physician, used to apply for Aid and Attendance added to monthly compensation or pension. Bring the blank form to the next appointment. Do not tell the doctor what to write. The 21-2680 briefing is the exam page. If he is already receiving a VA pension without the add-on, that still does not put him on the $29,093 line. If he is not on a pension yet, there is no add-on to talk about.
Block 03Why this desk will not print a monthly check
MAPR is annual. Your countable income is not on this page. This desk does not divide $29,093, $21,313, or $17,441 by twelve. A monthly figure produced that way is a homemade number. VA did not print it here, so this briefing will not either.
Countable income reduces what is paid. Social Security is usually the number a son in St. Louis County has in his head. This desk does not compute his Social Security against the table. Bring the current award letter to a VSO, plus any other pension, annuity payment, or wages still coming in. Do not recap them from memory. A consultant who maps countable income as a sales tool is not a VSO.
Care you already pay for can change the income math. That is unreimbursed medical expenses, documented, not a rumor. 38 CFR 3.278 is the regulation. Form 21P-8416 is the page you report them on. Keep invoices and a hour log. The UME briefing is the worksheet conversation. Do not invent a spreadsheet of "what the VA will pay after we subtract care."
The IRS is a different system. Topic 502 uses a 7.5 percent adjusted-gross-income floor. Do not mix that floor into a VA pension worksheet. A dollar-figure pitch in this metro quotes the Veteran-with-no-dependents Aid and Attendance MAPR, converts it to monthly, and offers it as a care budget, with no countable income, no net worth, and no Form 21-2680 in the folder. Take that flyer to a VSO as a document. The table on VA.gov is the evidence.
Block 04Order of forms, and care while the number is still unknown
The Veteran application is VA Form 21P-527EZ, Application for Veterans Pension. The exam is 21-2680. Expenses, if you have them, go on 21P-8416. An intent to file can protect the effective date while you gather the DD214 and the doctor's page. None of that requires a paid consultant. VA says the services an accredited VSO representative provides on VA benefit claims are always free. In this metro, start with a Missouri Veterans Commission service officer or the county veterans program. The doors are on the free-filing page. Do not pay a fee to file. Do not transfer assets to manufacture eligibility.
The number on the table is not a person in the hallway. Care can start on private pay while the claim is pending. Medicare does not pay for 24-hour-a-day care at home, and it does not pay for custodial or personal care when that is the only care needed. Medicare does not pay for long-term care. If home health is in a discharge plan, that is skilled and part-time. The sibling briefing on that mix-up is home health versus home care after the hospital.
If you later receive a pension with the add-on, it is cash, not a voucher sent to a care company. Do not sign a care contract tonight on the strength of a flyer monthly. Do not leave the house empty until a letter shows up either. The timing briefing is the clock page. Bring the VSO the DD214, the current Social Security award letter, a one-page list of other income, invoices if you already pay for care, blank 21-2680, and a one-page note of what he cannot do alone. That note is not a diagnosis, and it is not a MAPR row.
TonightWhat to do tonight
- Open the VA pension rates table. Write the rate year on a card: from December 1, 2025, to November 30, 2026. Circle the Veteran-with-no-dependents row only if that is actually the household. If it is not, find the matching line on VA.gov. Do not invent it.
- Write "annual maximum, not a check" under the number. Do not divide it by twelve.
- Put the current Social Security award letter in the same folder as the DD214. This desk does not run that number against MAPR.
- Do not sign a care contract on a flyer monthly. Do not transfer assets. Do not pay a fee to file. Call a VSO in the morning.
When to ask the care team or the doctor
Whether he needs regular help with bathing, dressing, feeding, or whether he is housebound, is a question for the physician who treats him. This desk does not decide it, and a MAPR row does not decide it either. The examining physician completes Form 21-2680. If he has fallen, if he is newly confused, if nights have become unsafe, call the care team or the doctor. Aid and Attendance is a benefits question. A change in the body is a medical question.
Tear off / take to a VSO

New Plan Care
Families hear a MAPR figure, convert it to monthly, and then try to hire care as if the table were a staffing schedule. It is not. If the house needs a person while the claim is still a claim, New Plan Care is an independently owned non-medical in-home care company based in Chesterfield, Missouri, serving Ballwin, Chesterfield, Eureka, Glencoe, Grover, Pacific, Valley Park and St. Louis. Hours at home are a separate purchase, often started on private pay.
New Plan Care pays for this spot. It is a client of OwnersFirm, which publishes this site. Read it as an advertisement, not as a rank or a recommendation.
New Plan Care keeps the hours this page is about.
