What is the VA Aid and Attendance income limit and net worth cap for this rate year?

File income / net worth / look-back Date 11 September 2026 Desk Aid and Attendance STL. Not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. statusAsk a VSO

What is the VA Aid and Attendance income limit and net worth cap is two questions that a pitch likes to merge into one fake number. There is not a secret income cutoff hiding behind the pension. There is a Maximum Annual Pension Rate, there is countable income, and there is a net worth limit for this rate year. If someone starts with an annuity before opening the rates page, that is a restructure, not a briefing.

By the Aid and Attendance STL desk. September 11, 2026. Every number links to its source.

Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits are monthly payments added to a VA pension for qualified Veterans and survivors who need help with daily activities such as bathing, feeding, and dressing, or who are housebound. You cannot receive both add-ons at once. The add-on rides on the pension. Yearly family income and net worth have to meet congressional limits. This page quotes the net worth figure VA published for this rate year, quotes one MAPR row, and will not move his money. Do not move it tonight either.

Block 01

Is there a separate Aid and Attendance income limit?

No. Men type "Aid and Attendance income limit" because a flyer used those words. The actual system is the Veterans Pension. VA says the pension pays monthly amounts to wartime Veterans whose yearly family income and net worth meet congressional limits, and who are at least 65, or have a permanent and total disability, or live in a nursing home for long-term care because of a disability, or receive SSDI or SSI. Discharge cannot be dishonorable. Wartime periods live on that eligibility page. The three-gates briefing is the service page on this desk.

Income, for the payment, is not a hidden second ceiling. VA publishes Maximum Annual Pension Rates. MAPR is a maximum annual rate. Countable income reduces what is paid. From December 1, 2025, to November 30, 2026, Maximum Annual Pension Rates increased 2.8 percent effective December 1, 2025. For a Veteran with no dependents, VA lists MAPR as $17,441 without Housebound or Aid and Attendance, $21,313 with Housebound, and $29,093 with Aid and Attendance. Other household sizes are on the same table. This desk does not invent those rows, and does not compute his Social Security against them. Bring the award letter to a VSO.

If countable income is high on paper, that still is not the end of the file. Unreimbursed medical expenses can reduce countable income. The regulation is 38 CFR 3.278. The form is 21P-8416. Keep invoices and a hour log. Details sit on the UME briefing. The IRS is a different system: Topic 502 uses a 7.5 percent adjusted-gross-income floor. Do not mix that floor into a VA pension worksheet. Need is still a separate gate. VA Form 21-2680 is the exam page. The son does not fill in the medical findings. The 21-2680 briefing is that stack.

Block 02

What is the net worth cap for this rate year?

From December 1, 2025, to November 30, 2026, the net worth limit to be eligible for Veterans Pension benefits is $163,699. That is VA's number for this rate year. If you are reading this after November 30, 2026, open that page again. Do not trust a printout from last winter, and do not trust a number written on a yellow pad in a conference room.

What counts toward net worth is on that rates page. This desk does not inventory the house, the lot, the truck, or the burial account from the kitchen table. Open the page. Write the questions it actually raises. Take them to a VSO. An elder law attorney is a different professional from a person selling an annuity as the price of a claim. Net worth and income are not the same gate. A household can be under $163,699 and still receive little or nothing if countable income sits against MAPR. A household can have modest monthly income and still fail net worth. The 2026 pay briefing is the table page. This page stays on the cap and the look-back.

Block 03

The three-year look-back and the five-year penalty

VA reviews asset transfers in the three years before the claim. If assets were transferred for less than fair market value during that look-back, and those assets would have pushed net worth over the limit, a penalty period of up to five years can apply. That is the sentence a "we restructure this week" pitch is dancing around.

Do not transfer assets to manufacture eligibility. Do not gift the account to a sibling tonight. Do not sign an annuity as the price of filing. Do not pay a fee to file. A VSO files the claim. An accredited VSO's help on a VA benefit claim is always free. If the person across the table needs a check before the 21P-527EZ is in, you are in the wrong office. The local doors are on the St. Louis County VSO page.

What the look-back pitch sounds like in this metro: "You are over the cap unless we move this before Friday." "This product is how veterans qualify." "We file after the money is placed." None of those sentences is a VA form. The forms are 21P-527EZ for a Veteran, 21P-534EZ for a surviving spouse, 21-2680 for the exam, and 21P-8416 for unreimbursed expenses. An intent to file can protect a date while you gather paper. Intent to file is not an asset transfer. If money already moved in the last three years, write what moved, when, to whom, and for how much, and take that note to a VSO. This desk does not unwind it. VA decides a penalty period.

Block 04

What to bring to a VSO instead of moving money tonight

Start with the state. The Missouri Veterans Commission Veterans Service Program is the accredited filing door. St. Louis County also runs a County Veterans Program that assists with pension claims and medical expense reporting. Call before you drive. The Commission's status board lives at veteranbenefits.mo.gov/office-closures. The regional benefit office is the St. Louis VA Regional Benefit Office on Page Avenue. A VSO will pick the door. You do not need a paid consultant to print federal forms.

Bring this stack, in this order:

  • DD214, or the branch, years, and war he names if the paper is missing
  • Current Social Security award letter, and any other income paper you can put a hand on
  • A one-page list of accounts and titled property, as facts, not as a plan to move them
  • If anything was transferred in the last three years: what, when, to whom, for how much
  • Invoices and a hour log if you are already paying for care
  • Blank 21-2680 for the next doctor visit
  • A one-page note of what he cannot do alone. That note is context, not a diagnosis.

Do not bring a signed product application or a flyer with a circled monthly as if it were a VA letter. If someone in the family is pushing a transfer, say that out loud in the appointment. Care can start on private pay while the claim is pending. Medicare does not pay for 24-hour-a-day care at home, and it does not pay for custodial or personal care when that is the only care needed. Medicare does not pay for long-term care. Buying hours because he cannot be left alone is a care decision. Buying hours, or a financial product, to change a net worth number is the look-back conversation. The timing briefing is the clock. The two-doors briefing is cash versus VA-arranged aide hours.

Tonight

What to do tonight

  1. Open the VA pension rates page. Write $163,699 and the rate year on a card: from December 1, 2025, to November 30, 2026. Write "look-back: three years" under it. Write "penalty: up to five years" under that.
  2. Do not transfer assets, sign an annuity, gift an account, or pay a fee to file.
  3. Put the DD214, the Social Security letter, and any care invoices in one folder. If a transfer already happened, add the one-page note of what moved.
  4. Call a VSO in the morning. MVC and the county program are the free doors. Bring the folder. Leave the product brochure at home.

When to ask the care team or the doctor

Whether he needs regular help with bathing, dressing, feeding, or whether he is housebound, is a question for the physician who treats him. Net worth does not answer it. The examining physician completes Form 21-2680. If he has fallen, if he is newly confused, if nights have become unsafe, call the care team or the doctor. Aid and Attendance is a benefits question. A change in the body is a medical question. If the house is empty tonight, cover the night.

Tear off / do not move money

  • Net worth limit $163,699, this rate year only, from VA.gov
  • Three-year look-back, penalty of up to five years
  • DD214, award letter, account list, transfer note if any
  • Blank 21-2680, invoices if you already pay for care
  • No asset move, no annuity, no fee to file

Next: which MAPR row he is actually on, and who files this for free in St. Louis County.
